The God Box
oil pastel 26" X 20"
Its a deep part of our nature to process things or ideas to make them fit into our own ideology or thought system. We are often afraid to look at the truth and this way of squeezing things into our personal box gives us comfort yet gives us a false life built not on the truth but on the back of a paper tiger. I think God is the most approached in this way. The fear of our theology or our tradition being challenged is too much to handle because a lot of people base their entire being on that theology or tradition. The fact that it may be wrong and could crumble is beyond some peoples' ability to handle. Our ability to reason or somehow use our intellect to dissect God is a failure as well. A lot of people use that method to create their God box as we live in a society that prides itself on reason and intellect.
In the wake of the tsunami tragedy I myself have been tempted to try to understand that which is not understandable. As a follower of Christ and having a personal history with Him I still find myself falling into the God box trap. Yet the mystery of God is clear and I am awakened again to my place as a created being. But that letting go is the beginning of understanding.
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are My ways your ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts."
Isaiah 55
